Briefing on the Anti-Corruption Champion
In June 2022, John Penrose MP resigned from the position of Anti-Corruption Champion, creating a vacancy. In response to this situation, we put together a briefing outlining the characteristics of successful Anti-Corruption Champions, suggestions for the new incumbent’s priorities, and the following recommendations for next steps:
An interim Anti-Corruption Champion should be appointed swiftly and a public announcement made regarding the post’s priorities. The Minister for Security or the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster could be an appropriate interim post-holder.
The interim Champion, working through the Joint Anti-Corruption Unit in the Home Office, should launch a consultation to gather ideas and options for strengthening the UK’s Anti-Corruption Governance framework.
